Weah pleads to be included in reconstruction

Former international soccer star and Liberian presidential runner-up George Weah has
called on the war-battered nation's new leader to give his supporters a greater role in
government reconstruction projects.

Weah, who lost to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in Liberia's first elections since the
end of the 1989-2003 civil war, said that he had recently met Johnson-Sirleaf and had
pressed her to include his party's members in her efforts to rebuild the country.

"My people love to rebuild Liberia, to work constructively," said the former Chelsea
striker and one-time World Footballer of the Year.

Weah initially branded last year's electoral results fraudulent, but later dropped his court
challenge and attended Johnson-Sirleaf's January 16 inauguration as Africa's first
elected female head of state.

Presidential spokesperson Charles Nelson said he would have to consult
Johnson-Sirleaf before replying to Weah's comments.
